Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir will join the training roster for Ontrack during 2016.
Weir prepares his team of horses in Victoria from stables at Ballarat and Warrnambool.
“Darren Weir has for a long period of time been one of the most astute trainers in Victoria,” said Ontrack’s CEO Grant Morgan.
“We believe Victoria remains the leading racing state given its very good prizemoney, a wide range of high quality tracks and also a clear focus by Racing Victoria and the clubs of fostering ownership.”
Ontack will commence purchasing yearlings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale, followed by the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale.
Weir captured the Melbourne Cup with New Zealand Bred stayer Prince of Penzance who was selected at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale in 2011 for $50,000.
“We have supported the New Zealand sale and the New Zealand industry for some time now and feel this remains the number once source of middle distance performers in Australasia.”
“Ontrack will again be targeting NZ bred classic style colts and fillies and Darren Weir is an obvious choice to prepare some of these,” said Morgan.
Following the Gold Coast and New Zealand, Ontrack will turn its focus to the Inglis Sales series which commences in Sydney with the Classic Sale.
Ontrack secured star colt Brazen Beau from the Inglis Classic Sale in 2013 for just $70,000.
“Both Brazen Beau and Prince of Penzance demonstrate that high quality racehorses don’t have to cost a fortune. Both horses have provided a large number of smaller owners with experiences of a lifetime,” said Morgan.
